Continuous glucose monitoring measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid which surrounds skin cells. Monitoring provides continuous information about glucose fluctuations that is not otherwise obtained with intermittent testing. The intent is to provide additional information to the clinician to aid in improved overall glycemic control. This particular Guardian REAL-Time Continuous Glucose System is a pediatric model specifically for children and teenagers ages 7-17. The Guardian REAL-Time Pediatric System is a doctor-prescribed, patient-owned continuous glucose monitoring system that features a low glucose alert threshold that cannot be set below 90 mg/dL. This feature is intended to provide pediatric patients with additional warning time to react to potential hypoglycemia (low blood glucose). The Guardian REAL-Time Pediatric System goes anywhere you go, no matter how active your lifestyle is. The monitor is small, comfortable, and easy to wear. The tiny glucose sensor is discreet, easy to insert, and virtually painless. It connects directly to the small (about the size of a quarter) MiniLink REAL-Time Transmitter, which wirelessly sends your glucose data to the monitor. The MiniLink REAL-Time Transmitter and glucose sensor are waterproof when connected, allowing you to shower, bathe, and engage in water activities.
