Humulin is synthesized in a non-disease-producing special laboratory strain of Escherichia coli bacteria that has been genetically altered by the addition of the gene for human insulin production. Humulin N is a crystalline suspension of human insulin with protamine and zinc.

Notes:

• Because the medication is a suspension, you must shake or roll the vial (or roll and invert the pen) until the insulin looks uniformly cloudy.
• Vial requires using syringes.
• Humilin-N should not be used intravenously or intramuscularly.
• Your healthcare provider should show you exactly how to inject Humulin N. It can be injected into the skin and fat layer of the abdomen (stomach), upper arm, or thigh.
• The duration of action of Humulin N is dependent on dose, site of injection, blood supply, temperature, and physical activity.
• When mixing Humulin N with regular insulin be sure to draw up the regular insulin first (insulin pens don’t allow mixing).
