What Supplements Can I Take for Insomnia?
There are many supplements and herbal remedies and other medications that are designed to help you fall asleep. However, they are two that have been scientifically studied and proven to have significant benefits. These remedies are valerian and melatonin. Valerian has been used as a sedative for many years. Similar to sleep medications that include benzodiazepines, valerian seems to improve the function of the neurotransmitter known as GABA. The chemical name for GABA is gamma amino butyric acid.
Melatonin is a neurohormone that has been proven to have an effect on sleep. People that have insomnia have low levels of this chemical. Some people that have problems sleeping before 2 am could benefit from the use of this chemical.
However, it can only be considered for a treatment that lasts from one to two months. In addition, it will take several days but less than two weeks for you to see results. If you use it for more than two weeks and don’t see changes, it won’t work for you.
