US Is the Most Expensive Place Globally for Type 2 Diabetes Patients

A new study has revealed that the United State is the most expensive place for a patient to have Type 2 diabetes. The average lifetime cost was calculated at $283,000. The findings were discovered by researchers at the University of East Anglia. In the study, they analyzed over 100 studies about the impact of Type 2 diabetes on the economy and found that the costs are much higher in the United States, even when these costs are compared with other countries of similar income levels for its residents.

The study also found that women with Type 2 diabetes face significant disadvantages with regards to employment opportunities. These women lose roughly $21,000 each year in earnings due to Type 2 diabetes. In countries outside of the United States, men with diabetes are more likely to suffer. The people that suffer the greatest loses from diabetes are people in low- and middle-income countries.

There are approximately 380 million people with diabetes worldwide and the number of individuals with this condition is expected to grow. The majority of the new cases of diabetes are appearing in countries such as Mexico, India, and China. By the year 2035, it is estimated that there will be roughly 600 million people worldwide that have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
