When Diabetes and Anemia Coexist

About a quarter of all people with diabetes will also be anaemic. In anemia there are fewer red blood cells than normal, and speculation is that the reason it can coexist with diabetes is because the hormone that regulates the production of red blood cells, which is called erythropoietin, is produced by the kidneys. As kidney damage is a common complication of diabetes, one problem often leads to the other.
