A Healthier Life with Diabetes

Of course you need to make some changes but they are all changes that will help you to live a healthier lifestyle and feel better as well. So if you take a look at the big picture, not only are you learning how to manage your diabetes but you are also going to be improving your quality of life at the same time. It is extremely important to make the changes necessary if you are going to live a healthy life with diabetes.

One of the most important things that you can do in order to maintain your diabetes is to lose weight if you are overweight to begin with, especially belly fat, until you are at the right weight to maintain it as best as possible. When you are at your ideal weight it is much easier to maintain your blood sugar count and keep things under control. This is especially true for those with type 2 diabetes. Not to mention that by keeping a healthy weight you feel better about yourself and when you look great, you feel great. No one wants to be overweight, no matter the choice.

Keeping an eye on your blood sugar level is also vital to managing diabetes. By checking the levels of glucose at least two times a day, you can help to keep your levels stable and the results can let you know if you need to change things in your diet. Many diabetes patients keep a log of their results before and/or after they eat to help them better understand the foods that can affect their levels. Exercise can also affect your levels, so this could be another time that someone with diabetes would want to check their levels often as well.

Yes it is true that those with diabetes need to watch the type of foods that they eat but carbohydrates can have a major effect on your levels. This is a time when a log could come on handy in order to see how many carbs you are eating and how often. They can have a big effect on blood sugar levels so a log can let you know if you need to add more fiber to your diet such as whole grains, vegetables and even fruit. The log can also help you know that when you are going to have something high in carbs during a meal, you can balance it out by eating the right foods the rest of the day.

Managing stress and getting the right amount of sleep are also important. However, these are things that everyone should be doing no matter if they are diabetic or not. But, diabetes is better managed when stress is kept to a minimum and the right amount of sleep is had each and every night. Of course regular exercise and seeing your doctor on a regular basis are also on the list.
