Diabetes and Taking Care of Your Heart
Along with the many things that you need to be concerned about when it comes to having diabetes, taking care of your heart is a big concern. Those with diabetes are at a higher risk for coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. It is possible that you may have already had a heart attack or stroke, or your doctor may have told you that you are risk. With the right changes in your lifestyle, it is possible to prevent future attacks and keep from having one at all. This means that you need to eat a proper diet, get the right amount of exercise, take your medication, and of course, get the right amount of sleep. Your body needs rest in order to function correctly.

This happens when the blood vessels leading to your heart become too narrow for blood to flow correctly, or they actually become blocked. When this occurs, your heart is not getting the amounts of oxygen and blood flow that it needs in order to work correctly, and a heart attack can be the result, however, the things you can do to help prevent this are easy. Monitoring your cholesterol intake is also a plus. Learning the difference between good and bad cholesterol can mean the difference between a healthy and unhealthy heart.

You will be able to start a great relationship with your heart just by eating right. Cutting down on the amount of fats that you eat, switching over to meats that are leaner, making sure that you get the right amount of fruits and veggies, watching your cholesterol intake, adding more fish to your diet, using less salt and using better cooking methods such as grilling and baking, are all ways to change your eating habits for the better. Using a nonstick pan or spray is also a good idea.
By eating right and getting some exercise each and every day, you will not only be able to keep things under control, but you will also be able to maintain a healthier weight, which is important when you are diabetic. Being overweight means that you are putting yourself at a higher risk for many other medical conditions, as well as an even higher risk for heart disease. Of course, it is important to speak with your doctor before you make any major changes in case you need to make adjustments to your medications. It is possible that, as you start to eat healthier, your body will start to work correctly on its own and you may need less medication.
