Eat Right with Diabetes

eating right diabetesThere is no question that you need to take your medication correctly when you are diabetic, however eating right with diabetes is also crucial. With a proper diet, you will be able to keep your blood sugar levels where they need to be which will keep you healthy and help to prevent other medical conditions as well. By eating the right foods, you will be able to maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease, and feel better each and every day as your body will feel great.

Knowing what foods to eat and how much is half the battle. They say that knowledge is power and if you are not sure, the diabetes food pyramid can give you the guidance that you need. This pyramid will show you how the food groups are divided up and what each one contains. The foods at the bottom of the pyramid are the ones that you should eat the most of and the ones at the top are the foods that you should eat sparingly. Foods that are high in carbs need to be monitored closely as they can have a major impact on your blood glucose levels.

For a woman that is small to medium sized in build, who either exercises a little or not at all, and needs to lose weight, you should consume between 1,200 and 1,600 calories per day.  You should consume between 1,600 and 2,000 calories per day if you are a woman that is large and needs to lose weight, a man who is small at a good weight, a medium to large man that does not exercise, or a medium to large man that needs to lose weight. For those who are active, a medium to large man, a medium to large woman, or a large man at a healthy weight, you should have 2,000 to 2,400 calories.

Of course when you are not feeling well, it can be hard to stick to a diet that is healthy and eat the amount of foods that you should. This, of course, puts your blood glucose levels at risk of becoming too high, so it is important to make sure that you take your medications and check your levels more often. If you are having trouble eating and holding down food, try substituting with crackers, soup, or some juice.

Eating your foods that way is also important in order to get the right amount of nutrients and not too much sugar. For example, when it comes to fruit, eat them raw or cooked in their own natural juice. Keep the sugar deserts for that special occasion and opt for fresh fruit as opposed to fruit juice. When you are eating meat or poultry, such as chicken, remove the skin and as much fat as possible, and cook it in a healthy way such as roasting, steaming, grilling, or broiling. Eating the right foods with diabetes is just as important as knowing how to cook them and how much to eat.
