Are Shift Workers Doomed to Suffer From Type Two Diabetes and Obesity?

There has been research that states that shiftwork could lead to diabetes. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Believe it or not the study states that shift workers do not get enough sleep nor do they sleep during the right part of the day. Most shift workers work crazy hours that can throw off their biological clock. The best time of day to get sleep is between the hours of ten at night until two in the morning. This is the best time frame to get REM sleep. Your body gains more energy and rest from REM sleep, which is the deepest state of sleep.

Disruptions in Sleep Patterns Could Lead to Health Problems

Changes in a normal sleep pattern can cause your body to be unable to regulate blood sugar levels properly. It is recommended that you get eight hours of sleep at night to properly reenergize your body so that it can perform to the best of its ability. Researchers took twenty one people and controlled their lives for a period of a few weeks. During the period the amount of sleep that the participants received was controlled. As the body was significant deprived of sleep results showed that they had abnormal blood sugar levels. Both high and low blood sugar levels were recorded during the study. A fasting blood sugar level was also taken. There is not enough solid evidence that there is a direct link between shift workers sleeping patterns and the development of diabetes. More research needs to be conducted to better protect people in the future from diabetes. Diabetes is a serious condition.

More Research Is Needed

The participants were also deprived of natural sunlight. Natural sunlight can help the body reset the internal clock. Some of the participants started developing symptoms in just a few weeks’ time. Other participants showed symptoms of a condition called prediabetes. The body tends to slow down when deprived of sleep. Lack of sleep can also cause you to put on excess weight. Your productivity can slow down when you are run down. Feeling sluggish may cause you to cut down on physical activity and weight gain is likely to occur. There has been a lot of scientific proof that obesity leads to the development of diabetes.

Practice Smart Sleeping Habits

Shift workers often have a difficult time sleeping during the daylight. This has a serious effect on their bodies and health. There have been a lot of people in the medical community that rebuke this research. They state that the study is flawed. It is true that not all shift workers will develop diabetes, but some will. This could be a problem that you can easily avoid by not putting yourself at risk. Practice common sense and try to get as much sleep as possible. If you must work a position that requires shift work you should try to block out all of the light in your room and remove any distractions that will make it difficult for you to sleep.
