9 Common Diabetes Facts & Myths

There have always been different myths about diabetes. Find out here if they are true or not.

Myth: Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar.

Fact: Type 1 diabetes is primarily caused by genetics and different unknown triggers that make the disease occur. Type 2 diabetes is caused by your body not being able to respond to insulin. Genetics and the way you live your life can eventually cause diabetes. Eating too much sugar can make you gain weight which can increase the risk of getting diabetes. So there is some truth to this myth.

Myth: Obese and overweight people always develop type 2 diabetes eventually.

Fact: Being overweight can be a risk factor, but other risk factors are even more important. Most people who are overweight never get diabetes while people with normal body weight often do.

Myth: Diabetes is contagious.

Fact: If you have diabetes like your mother or father, it is not because it is contagious. Genetics plays an important role in developing diabetes, but it is definitely not contagious.

Myth: People with diabetes can never eat sugar.

Fact: This is definitely not true! Everybody needs sugar for energy. You can’t function without sugar. You can’t eat most candy and sweets, but fruits and other sugars as parts of wholesome meals are necessary. All foods with sugar must be carefully inserted to your meal plan.

Myth: Children can be cured of diabetes.

Fact: Nobody can outgrow or be cured of diabetes. In type 1 diabetes the cells that produce insulin are destroyed and can’t be cured. Children with type 1 diabetes will always have to take insulin. Children with type 2 diabetes can improve significantly by using the right medication and by practicing a healthy lifestyle. However, they still have to monitor their blood sugar levels and follow a healthy diet.

Myth: I can have just a little diabetes.

Fact: You either have diabetes or you don’t. That goes for both types. Even if you don’t need insulin shots or treatment permanently with type 2 diabetes, you still have to maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep your blood sugar under control.

Myth: Insulin offers cure for diabetes.

Fact: Insulin only helps to manage diabetes by moving glucose from the blood to the cells for making energy. It helps to keep you blood sugar normal, but it doesn’t cure you.

Myth: People with diabetes can only eat special food made for diabetics.

Fact: Diabetics should have a healthy diet to maintain their blood sugar level, but this type of diet is recommended for everyone. Many diabetic foods help to raise glucose levels in the blood and can have a laxative effect.

Myth: Diabetics can tell whether their blood sugar is high or low.

Fact: Although some diabetics may feel bad and develop symptoms like extensive thirst or weakness, the only way to really know your sugar level is to test it. In order to feel any symptoms the sugar level has to be really high. You should get tested often as having high glucose levels for long periods of time can cause permanent damage.
