How to Care for Your Feet if You Have Diabetes

The disease also reduces blood flow to your feet and this makes healing from injury or infection much more difficult. The loss of feeling makes it difficult to tell if you have anything in your shoe or if you step on any sharp objects. It can also cause your blisters or sores that can turn into ulcers. If these ulcers get infected there can be serious outcomes, such as amputations. If you want to avoid these problems, you need to take good care of your feet.

The most important thing is to keep your diabetes under control. Check your blood glucose level regularly and take any medicine prescribed for you. Check your feet regularly. It is a good idea to check for cuts, swelling, red spots, blisters or any other changes every day. If you discover anything abnormal, contact your doctor.

You should also wash your feet every day. Use a soft soap and mild warm water. Take care of the skin of your feet. Use a lotion on the top and the bottom on each foot. Trim your toenails whenever needed. Keep your toenails straight and smooth the edges. Wear socks all the time and never go anywhere without socks. Keep the socks clean (changing them every day) and don’t use socks with tight elastic bands. You can also wear socks to bed when you feel cold at night. Never use a hot water bottle. Make sure there are no pebbles or other objects in your socks before wearing them. You need to do this because you might not feel these objects in your socks when wearing them.  Keep your feet dry at all times. To keep the blood flowing, put your feet up whenever sitting down. Don’t sit with your legs crossed. Smoking is also very bad for your feet.

There are various types of foot care products available for diabetics. Diabetic socks are the most common. They help to control moisture and reduce the risk of infections. They don’t wrinkle and they don’t have seams. This way you can avoid blister pressure on your feet. There are no elastic bands on top of the sock to improve blood flow. Most diabetic socks are made of cotton blends or non-cotton materials that have antimicrobial features. These socks don’t usually look any different from regular socks and you can find them next to ordinary socks in any store. Diabetic socks are usually white, but other colors have become available recently.

The use of diabetic foot creams also helps you to take good care of your feet. Apply the cream or lotion after washing and drying your feet. Remember not to apply it between your toes, since this can make your foot problems worse. Diabetic foot creams can also help to reduce numbness in your feet and help to prevent other problems. Even if you are wearing good socks and are taking good care of your feet, you should still have them checked by your doctor regularly.
